Huawei Ascend Mate vs Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 Review

,
Though smartphones are becoming bigger and better every day, the plethora of choices makes it difficult to find the handset that's just right for your tastes and needs. Phablet lovers are in luck, for we have pitted the Ascend Mate against the Galaxy Mega 6.3 to help you pick out the one for you
  • Form
Ascend Mate: 163.5 x 85.7 x 9.9mm, 198g
Galaxy Mega 6.3: 167.6 x 88 x 8mm, 199g
Though both phones are large, the Ascend Mate is smaller than its competitor but not thinner. It's basic quality soft touch plastic back casing and slightly rough side rims give it a somewhat unfinished look. Although the handset doesn't have the finesse of the Galaxy Mega 6.3, it is relatively easier to grip and use because of its dimensions and build.
The Galaxy Mega 6.3 has a polished appearance. Despite its hugeness, its slimness adds to its appeal, as does its bezel. The coloured back panel gives it a touch of sophistication too. Though both the handsets can hardly be used with just one hand, the Mega 6.3 is even less cut out for single handed use than its competitor.
With its good looks and build quality, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 wins the form round.
Winner: Galaxy Mega 6.3
  • Display
Huawei has given the Ascend Mate a 6.1-inch Super IPS+ LCD screen with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and a pixel density of 241ppi. Colours are rich and contrasts are deep on the display. Texts, pictures and videos are clear and easy to view, even in bright sunlight.
The Galaxy Mega 6.3 is equipped with a larger 6.3-inch TFT display with the same resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and a pixel density of 233ppi. The screen is ideal for watching videos, surfing the web and reading emails on the go with its bright colours and sharp images.
Viewing angles are good on both devices, which is important for phones of this size, especially since they need to be held a little further away from one's eyes.
With its clearer display, the Ascend Mate wins this round.
Winner: Ascend Mate
  • Processor
Huawei's own quad-core 1.5 GHz processor powers the Ascend Mate, lending it enough juice to carry on all of Android Jelly Bean's tasks seamlessly, no matter how simple or complex they are. The phone is equipped with a RAM of 2 GB.
Samsung has given its phablet a dual-core 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip-set with a Krait processor and an Adreno 305 GPU. It handles all of Android Jelly Bean's apps with ease. It also comes with 1.5 GB of RAM.
Multi-tasking on both the handsets is a breeze and their performance is pretty much at par.
Winner: Draw
  • Storage
Huawei's phablet packs in an internal storage of 16 GB which is expandable externally with a microSD card by up to 32 GB.
The Galaxy Mega 6.3 is equipped with an in-built memory of 8 GB which can be expanded externally by up to another 64 GB.
Its larger in-built memory wins the Ascend Mate this round.
Winner: Ascend Mate
  • Operating System
Both the handsets run on Android's Jelly Bean operating system. While the Ascend Mate packs in Huawei's Emotion UI, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 is equipped with Samsung's Nature UX interface.
Along with all the features of Android 4.2, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 also packs in Samsung innovations like Smart Screen, gesture control, Multi Window and Air View.
Huawei's UI does not add so many features to Android 4.1 on the Ascend Mate, rather it simplifies the process of using the smartphone with its convenient touch buttons for navigation. A simpler interface, it gives precedence to the features of Google's OS.
All its added features win the Galaxy Mate 6.3 this round.
Winner: Galaxy Mega 6.3
  • Camera
Both the phablets ship with an 8-megapixel primary shooter that is equipped with LED flash, auto focus, geo tagging, burst mode, HDR, scenes, face and smile detection, HD video recording, effects etc.
However, editing and shooting options are more on Samsung's handset and colour reproduction is better on the device, even if it is slightly over saturated. The phone also packs in a 1.9-megapixel front facing snapper. The secondary camera on the Ascend Mate is a 1-megapixel one.
With its better camera functions, Samsung wins this round.
Winner: Galaxy Mega 6.3
  • After sales service
Samsung is a well established brand in India. With its vast catalogue of products and large distribution network, after sales service for its handsets is accessible relatively easily throughout the country. Though there have been some complaints in laxity of after sales service by Samsung, by and large it is reliable.
Huawei is striving hard to carve a niche for itself in the Indian smartphone arena and as a part of its development plan, is upping the ante as far as it sales and services are concerned. The brand is growing steadily and since it is eager to please its Indian clientele, it should be prompt and efficient in its after sales service.
Winner: Draw
  • Conclusion
The Galaxy Mega 6.3 has the backing of the Samsung brand and with it comes the added functionality of its interface and camera. Those who desire a big, polished looking phone with a large display, new-age camera and added storage options can easily go in for the handset.
Those who would prefer a slightly smaller but no less responsive and functional device will be happy with the Huawei Ascend Mate, specially with its gorgeous display, crystal clear sounds and clean user interface.
